A Home That Belongs

From the outset, the brief was clear and heartfelt: “I want a house that feels like it has always been here.”

This aspiration shaped every decision from massing and materials to the rhythm of openings and the flow of internal space. It is a project that demonstrates how architecture can feel both new and rooted, contemporary yet familiar.

Design Approach: Responding with Sensitivity

Rather than making a bold statement, the design for Old Colliers Walk takes its cues from its neighbours and the surrounding landscape. With its low-profile dormer form and traditional proportions, the building blends into the rhythm of the street, offering a sense of permanence and quiet continuity.

Internally, the planning is deceptively simple. A central staircase acts as a spine linking basement, ground, and first floor while creating a strong sense of movement through the home. This careful spatial choreography results in a natural, intuitive flow between living spaces.

Material Strategy: Soft Transitions and Natural Connections

Graded landscape elements soften the threshold between house and garden, and each key room is oriented to offer framed views of the surrounding grounds. These visual connections enhance the sense of stillness and groundedness throughout the house.

Materials were selected with longevity and tone in mind honest, tactile finishes that complement the agricultural heritage of the area. Subtle in character but strong in composition, these elements help the building sit comfortably in its context.

A Collaborative Process, A Shared Vision

Old Colliers Walk is another concept-to-completion journey for our team, and a reminder of the power of collaboration. Working closely with the client a retired farmer with a deep appreciation for the land we were able to shape a home that feels as though it has grown from its surroundings.

The greatest reward came not in the final detailing, but in seeing the client's response and the quiet joy of witnessing a design become a lived reality, and a house become a home.

" I frequently return and meet with Richard (The client), it is impeccably rewarding to see how much he enjoys living in this building and it is always nice to sit and have a cup of tea and reminisce about the construction of his home. "
